I'M NOT A CHILD!
“I'm not an adult! How was I supposed to know that?” cried the same
child who only yesterday was complaining; "I'm not a child! stay out of my
business!”.
This is what adolescence is like. Where you’re neither a child nor
an adult. You cannot make as many mistakes as before, nor can you take as much
responsibility as an adult. You deal with tidal wave of emotions. One moment
you laugh, the next moment you start crying. You are a teenager. You still want
to play video games, but you also want to move out. You want your mother to
caress your head, but you lock yourself in your room as if you don't need any
attention. It is a period when one is in an existential crisis and confusion.
Even your clothes don’t fit. You can't wear clothes from children's
section and adult clothes are too big. If you are a male, you will find shoes
that fit you only in women's section.
There are no shoes for size 7-8 in men’s nor children's section. It's
like you don't exist. Sometimes adults give you a lot of work, you do it. They
ask you to leave the room when something serious is being discussed. You can't
exactly comprehend what’s happening. You need to constantly think about your
behavior. Is it appropriate? Am I being too childish or vice versa…
You try your father's shaving tools or use your mother's makeup.
Then you realize that none of it suits you. Because you're still a child. Your
body and emotional state constantly change, and you try to get used to it. You
think that no one can fully understands you. There are times when a sense of
loneliness overcomes you. Hormones, desires, responsibilities feel like all
intertwined. Dozens of things you have never experienced before… Your character
slowly begins to develop. You make mistakes all the time. Sometimes you say
things you shouldn't say so you get a lecture from your parents. Sometimes you
stay silent in the wrong time and cause other problems to arise. You have
friends, some you care too much about, even get depressed about. You need to choose a career, but you have no
idea which path to choose.
As you try to perceive life you struggle with it all at once. The
feeling of being caught in the middle, the flags of rebellion start to wave
slightly. Since you are dependent on your family, you control these feelings.
Otherwise, endless problems start to occur in your life.
When you look at it like this, it seems like a troublesome time full
of pain. You are not wrong, there are many difficulties you face in this time.
However, many firsts are also experienced during those times. There is a
various new flavors along with the difficulties and together they become
unforgettable memories. Your first efforts to ride a bicycle, first friendships,
all unfortunate first attempts are all happens during these days. Along with
the pain, there is also joy. You can understand it from your smile as you remember those times.
This is what apprenticeship is like. Whatever you do doesn't work
and you don't know what to do. Adolescence is apprenticeship of life. In every
new beginning, there is a period of difficulty. It is a phase that most of us
don't enjoy and want to skip as soon as possible. However, the cause of this
suffering is actually the one who attributes deep meanings to what he/she is
going through. When we accept this reality from the beginning and manage to
laugh at our mistakes, it starts to become enjoyable. We need to understand
that we have room for making mistakes and that this is the natural process.
Only then we can realize that all these moments which seem painful to us can
take a different form. Because what we are facing in our lives, things that
happen to us are neutral occurrences. We choose how to perceive these
occurrences…
The quest for learning is hidden in that little bit of pain. The
moment one learns how to enjoy it, life begins to open other doors for us. The
next stages start to become comfortable for us. Our learning speed and quality
of our life increases. We worry less about the problems we face. Apprenticeship
is good for us. It is where you take the most important steps to success.
