GRATITUDE

"Şükran, my name is Şükran, Şükran from gratitude..." she would say to those who asked. Şükran loved to tell her story.

Since she was the only one to continue family name, whole family wished her to give birth to a boy. The birth midwife gave the good news and left the home after birth. When the father arrived, he immediately understood, from the expressions of everyone including his wife, that he was the father of the seventh daughter. " What did not please you?” he asked in a harsh tone beyond reproach.

 "The birth of a child?"

"That mother and baby are healthy because of an easy birth?”

"That you don't have anything enough to be sad in your life?"

His father was a man of few words, but when he did speak, he impressed everyone. She always felt happy to have a father who was grateful for her birth. Maybe that's why she had a closer relationship with him than she built with her mother. His farewell to them and the world was unexpected and too early. But by naming her "Şükran”, he bequeathed the trust, hope and the joy she would need to continue her life.

Suddenly the mood of the room changed. Some coughed, some changed the way of their sitting, some stood up and some bowed their heads. "Be thankful," he said. “First be thankful for what you have been granted, then welcome it, then steep it within you. Be thankful that you have the skill to consider what lessons you should derive from this situation. If it is hard to do this, be thankful again and just ask for patience. Can Creator wrong you when He is in your favor?”

Her aunt used to repeat his these speech for years. She would praise her brother, encourage him to be grateful while enjoying to find an audience.

Is it really a personal choice to be grateful? Isn't everything already worthy of gratitude?

Why and when we normalized everything so much?

Was it because we gained more wealth?

Was it because of having more power?

Was it because thinking that we gained all these power and wealth by our own skills?

Maybe the situation was sad, maybe, but it was still instructive.

Just like her Turkish teacher’s words, "The worst examples warn you what not to be."

In other words, everything is a teacher for those who aspire to learn.

Şükran loved learning and tried to put what she learned into practice. She inherited this from her father. Because useless knowledge was a burden on the mind.

What can arrogant people, who think they know everything they heard, learn?

Can anybody remain unchanged?

Is there a gap in life?

Repeated mistakes, time lost in correcting them, resentment, anger, tension, endless complaints and finally being ingratitude...

He used to say, "This life is either spent being gratitude or complaining and cursing."

Isn't the granter of all these things worthy of gratitude even if we are not grateful?

Could we breath or use our hands if He did not let us to do so?

It is all the wisdom and blessing of the Granter.

Shouldn't we be thankful for these?

Also the animals would not be able to move if they were not allowed to do…

What makes man different than animals?

What makes them being gratitute?

Is it because of having ability to see, hear, taste or sense?

No, none of them…

It is because of having a will that can choose to be grateful or not.

Otherwise, would the will have been given?

Would he be told;

"Make your choice to be grateful or to curse."?

"Choose!" he was told. "Distinguish what is good and give it its due."

Say “Thanks” and be gratitude without getting tired and exhausting others, without forgetting that everything is worthy of gratitude…

If only one would realize it; without getting hurt, without losing what he has...

Whether he is aware or not, satisfied or not, of the things he is given temporarily...

If only he knew that everything is worthy of gratitude, if only he could do justice to what he knows...

If only he realized...

If only he could be thankful

If only he could be thankful
